CHAPTER 24
Jess
WINTER BREAK
After changing our flights and saying our goodbyes, we planned our return flights to arrive forty minutes apart on the same day the next week. The Uber driver pulls onto the road leading to the trailer park where my mother lives. As much as she tries to work, she cannot save enough to move out on her own.
Iâm hoping when I graduate, I can change all that. I want to take my mother out of here. She deserves better and has sacrificed so much for me. Sheâs never cared what people think of her living in the trailer park. Like always, they assume shit that isnât true.
As the vehicle leaves the trailer park, I see dust and smoke billowing from its rear bumper. The heat and age have turned the bottom of the trailerâs once-white door a dingy yellow. I drape the strap of my duffel bag over my shoulder and step toward the small concrete steps.
Inhaling deeply, I glance across at the nearby parking spot with one car and know sheâs home. When I would get home from school, I always knocked twice. She always worked the schedule that got her home in time to have supper ready for me every night. I would be surprised if she had kept the same shift since I left for Ohio. Iâm about to double knock, but the door swings open and I see my motherâs eyes widen and hear her squeal in excitement.
âJesse!â
âSurprise, Mom,â I say, waving my hands out wide.
âGet in here. Oh my god. You made it!â
I walk up the last steps of the shaky wood that leads between the concrete to the front door. Once inside, it smells like dollar store air freshener and old carpet. My mother could never make enough to change it because she saved every last dime she made to send me to college.
I embrace her tightly, shutting my eyes to keep the tears away. Sheâs clearly working double shifts, I see the tired lines around her eyes. âHow are you, Momma?â
âOh, honey. Iâm doing great now that youâre here,â she whispers as I hug her tight. She smells like the peach cobbler she always bakes at the diner. Itâs their signature favorite because she makes it.
âI miss you,â I whisper back.
God, I missed her. Itâs been almost four years since I last saw her. Only keeping in touch via phone.
We break apart and I close the front door, walking farther inside the small two-bedroom trailer. It is old but clean and it doesnât smell like stale cigarettes, like the neighbor's next door when my mother would tell me to drop off leftovers.
âIâm going to make you something to eat and then I have to leave for my shift, but you could drop me off and keep the car if you want.â
I smile. Iâll drive her just so she can relax, and Iâll pick her up until I leave. Anything to make her life a little easier. I tell her, âIâd love to take you, mom.
